TMT Rolling Industry V-1.0: Mechanism, Effect & the Future of Rebar Rolling Mills

What is TMT Rebar?

TMT bars are widely used in construction of buildings and other concrete structures. These rebars provide enhanced strength to RCC to withstand the load of concrete and at the same time lends better ductility, malleability and weldability to mould concrete in any desired shape with ease.

Continuous technological innovations have marked the journey of TMT bars in India which was first introduced during the mid-80s and since then, these steel bars have evolved in strength and ductility, earthquake and corrosion resisting properties and also in grades.

Production of Quality TMT Bars

These 3 major factors determine the quality of TMT Bar:

  • Superior Quality of raw materials
  • State of the art rolling mill that gives a uniform shape to all steel rebars
  • Advanced Quenching and Tempering technology

TMT Rolling Mills Play a Vital Role in Ensuring Quality Production of TMT Bars

Highly automated and integrated TMT rolling mills are crucial to the production of best TMT bars. Advanced rebar rolling mills leverage the latest technologies to thermo mechanical treat steel bars to give them a hard outer core and a soft inner core and endow them with high reinforcement strength and greater ductility. The integrated process of TMT manufacture, from iron ore melting to TMT rolling to quenching is carried out at fully automated and integrated TMT bar rolling mills.

Raw Materials for TMT Bars

The raw materials for production of TMT bars are coal, iron ore and dolomite. The manufacturing process involves piling, recovering and mixing of raw materials in required proportion.

Primary Steel Production Process

During Pre-treatment, carbon from the iron ore is oxidised to eliminate carbon dioxide in oxygen furnaces. This steel is then refined by passing through the EAF or Electric Arc Furnace. This molten steel is then cast into billets after undergoing a cooling process in the moulds

The Quenching of TMT Bars

Along with the advanced melting, casting and TMT rolling processes, TMT rolling mill processes come with sophisticated quenching technology that includes:

  • Quenching – the hot rolled bars that come out of the rolling mills are cooled through a water spray system called Thermex System, a well-known quenching technology from Germany.
  • Self-Tempering – In this process, the inner hot core of the bars pass on the heat to the surface layers causing “Tempering” of the outer Martensite layer and forming the “Tempered Martensite”.
  • Atmospheric Cooling – Following the self-tempering, these bars are left to cool of cooling bed at normal temperature. This step forms the austenitic core to turn as ferrite-pearlite structure which consist of the hard outer layer with softer inner core, lending the enhanced ductile property to these TMT bars.
